J Dilla: Dillanthology 2: Dilla’s Remixes for Various Artists
Dillanthology, Volume 1 featured the best of J Dilla’s production. Three months later Rapster Records delivers volume 2, the best of J Dilla’s remixes.
By now everyone knows the story of J Dilla. He was one of the most influential beat makers of our time when his life was cut short from the rare blood disease TTP in 2006. Since his death, the international hip hop community has rallied to keep his memory alive; the latest effort is Dillanthology 2.
The compilation contains Dilla’s remixes for such high profile artists as De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Masta Ace, Slum Village, and DJ Cam. The most familiar track remixed on the album is Busta Rhymes’ break out single “Whoo Ha”. Dilla takes Busta Rhymes in your face rap style and puts behind it a funky keyboard-driven instrumental track. The track is complete 180 from the original.
The major complaint I have is a lot of these remixes follow similar patterns. Most of them are the original vocal tracks over jazzy keyboards. For some tracks it works really well, but it gets tiring to listen to an entire album of. A couple of tracks break the mould, De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High” Featuring Mos Def & Truth Enola is more of a break beat remix. The remix sounds a lot more raw than the warm tones of most of Dilla’s remixes. The remix of Masta Ace’s “Sitting On Chrome” is another track that really embraces trebly drums and the remix focuses on a sample rather than jazzy keyboards.
The entire concept of Dillanthology 2 is cool, just to be able to assemble all these remixes in one place. This is a must have for all J Dilla fans and probably a good listen for any fan of hip hop.
